ACIS hosts UK leg of the CEN forum for future standards in on-vehicle connectivity

ACIS recently hosted a meeting of the European standards sub group focusing on developing on-vehicle connectivity standards. The availability of a practical standard methodology of connecting devices on bus will in the long term deliver lower cost solutions for bus companies and facilitate greater interconnectivity of the increasing range of on bus electronic systems resulting in increased functionality.

The standards currently available in EN13149 are based on two specialist architectures, WorldFIP and CANbus. Although finally ratified in 2004, these two frameworks are based on work, which goes back, a number of years, and accordingly do not take advantage of the huge developments in networking based on the Internet Protocol (IP). An increasing number of electronic devices fitted to buses are capable of communicating using IP networking technology. This proposal will seek to extend the current standards to include a third alternative, based on Internet Protocol (IP) networking technology.

ACIS has been an active member of this sub group from the inception of this topic last year. This activity forms part of ACIS' ongoing commitment to the development of standards for real time information both in the UK and Europe. As a member of the on-vehicle connectivity sub group, ACIS will spend the foreseeable future working with interested parties in other European Member countries to develop a proposal for formal ratification by CEN.
